Best excercise machine for me?
Ok....Wow. I was doing a 'body weight calculator and apparently at six feet two inches I should be around 170. I had another one say that I should be around 144 to 160 but that might be a little harsh? Being tall everything is always different for me.
I've been using resistance bands but recently i've killed my back. I'm not sure if it was due to the workouts because I usually do the heavy lifting around here, I live at home and help out how I can. You would never think the girl does the heavy lifting, but she does. >_>
As anyone else in this economy I am tight on money. And space. I wanted to know of other people's opinions on what would be the best for me as far as exercise machines go. Preferably an eliptical if it's possible there is one out there that will fit in a small space and does not cost an arm and a leg. (Because that's not exactly how I want to loses the weight.) I don't think the resistance bands are really doing it for me. I've definately been trying my best to watch what I eat which is hard when you live in a family where everyone else stores tempting things such as chocolate cake in the fridge.
I've also been discouraged a lot lately....I can go outside and walk anymore because we've hit record breaking cold. But my room is the bonus room over the garage and we have no heat upstairs so it's only slightly better than outside. And with my depression always getting in the way, especially during winter, and my really low thyroid it really makes it hard to do much.
I was hoping with a machine it that would target most of the major areas without being too harsh on my back. With the bands I have to get on and off the floor and switch positions numerously which I am not all saying they are not good for workouts, I just don't think that they are suiting me too well.
I've also been wondering about yoga. Is it worth adding to my routine?
I was hoping to gather as much info about excercise machines on a low budget and low space category. I may put off losing weight for another time if it's going to eat away at my schedule too much. :( I've had to study for my GED and i've put off job hunting till I get it.
Hope someone out there can help!

hi
I don't know what machines would be best for you. You might not even need one (they're expensive afterall). A good cardio video will be good for that. There are a lot of different ones.
I like the step workouts (I think my step came with a DVD and it was about $30 all together). Also I like belly dancing and I have a DVD that has not only the moves but a cardio workout as well.
Yoga, IMO, is wonderful! I feel more energized after doing yoga. I haven't done it in a while but I'm thinking of doing it in the mornings before I hit the gym. I have a book with great moves though if you're just starting with it you probably should either do a video or take a class.
About hurting yourself: Are you checking your form/posture? That can be a big contributing factor when it comes to injury. I had hurt my knees really bad doing lunges. After they healed I learned that it was my technique that caused the problem. Today I did lunges for the first time in a long time and I found that my knees handled it well. No pain. No injury.
HOpe this helps!

Suggestions
I'm generally not a fan of machines. I prefer free weights and bodyweight exercises and I walk or run or do yoga for cardo. So, yes, I do recommend yoga. I highly recommend power yoga - you'll get a high intensity cardio workout as well as working your muscles - I personally love the Bryan Kest videos for home yoga (they are hard though!!). There are tons fat-burning, muscle-building bodyweight workouts you can do at home - googling "bodyweight workouts" will get you a ton of options. And it's worth investing in a few sets of dumbells and a fitness ball as well.
Here's a no equipment cardio/leg workout I did Tuesday that kicked my butt you can try it! Body weight matrix - pace yourself, do every re quickly, do all reps for each exercise and then move to the next exercise w/o resting. Time how long the whole matrix takes you and then rest twice as long, then repeat the matrix! It'll take you less an 30 mins altogether and I GUARANTEE you will feel it.
24 squats - hands behind head
12 lunges (12 each leg, alternating legs) - hands behind head
12 jump lunges (12 each leg alternating legs, jump from lunge and switch legs into opposite leg lunge....these are hard and you'll probably need to swing your arms for momentum)
24 jump squats (get your feet off the ground between each rep)
Seriously I consider myself in pretty good shape and I was gasping and legs were burning after the first series, I think I paced a little better the 2nd time around but I am still sore from it! If you need to go slow or reduce reps the first few times feel free to adjust so you can get thru it.

Thanks!
Thanks for this, both of you. It definately opens up options I should try. I'll definately do the yoga and start looking into cardio.
