Coffe not count as water???? : Community Message Boards

Coffe not count as water????
How come coffee brewed with tap water does not count toward the water intake.? I don't believe my juice or sodas do either!!!! WHY????

So water is just water, right? and your body and kidneys need.... water. Juice, soda and coffee all contain sugar and caffeine.
In the best unscientific way I can explain it: sugar and caffeine "drag" water. Meaning your body doesn't get to use the fluid that comes from these beverages..... you kinda just pee it out. Your kidneys filter out all the excess vitamins, inpurites etc that your body doesn't need. So this is what I mean when I say "drag" water, the more your body filters out the more fluid it needs to do so.
Its hard to explain, but my best advice is to try some diluted crystal light instead of juice.

Recent studies have shown those ideas to be incorrect. A person who drinks 8 cups of coffee is no less hydrated than a person who drinks 8 cups of water.

True but...
This is true your body is going to hold onto any water it gets to keep itself hydrated, but if you compared two people, one who drank only coffee and one who drank water and moderate caffeine their urine concentrations would still be different they would have higher risks of forming kidney stones, frequent urination.... etc. So yes it may be true, but studies take one point and prove it. Sometimes they leave out other findings.
Water is good for your body. Coffee is good for me (my co-workers will testify to this). Do what you think is best for your body.

I would agree that you can't look at a single study and base all your decisions on that. However, there have been a lot of recent studies on the effects of coffee and a surprising number of things that "everybody knows" are being proven false or simply unsubstantiated. This includes the link to kidney stones. ;) I would suggest anyone curious or worried about the effects of coffee and caffeine do some research and make up your own mind. And remember, moderation is almost always a good thing.

Having said all of that, drinking more water is probably one thing that nearly all of us could do for a healthier body.
