It depends...
I drink diet soda with an otherwise healthy/balanced diet. I think that its a problem for some and not for others. I've heard from different reports and my physician that diet pop can make it more difficult to get rid of fat. Currently, i'm interested in losing weight. Then I'll tone up and get rid of the extra fat. I'm not an expert but in a can of diet soda, there are 0 calories. In a can of regular pop, there are 145+ calories. I'm a calorie counter so i go with diet pop. But you have to start somewhere, switching from regular to diet may be what you need to get going. I'm not sure how long you've been on your journey, but baby steps are better than backwards steps in my opinion.

Bad, just bad.
In my opinion - a former soda addict - they are all just plain old horrible. Depending upon your metabolism, lifestyle and current weight cutting soda out entirely can result in weight loss.

Currently, I have a soda maybe once in a blue moon... and when I cut them out of my life I lost weight. Don't let the can fool you... It may have 0 calories, but it has a ton of sugars and syrups. Those are HORRID for you. They can be OK in moderation, but frankly, if you are trying to jump start your metabolism and lose weight while gaining lean muscle... I'd recommend that you stay away from all sodas.

Hmmm
I also saw a report on the news a few weeks ago that either diet coke, or diet soda all together makes your chances of kidney damage like ~45% higher. You might want to do some research on it if you drink a lot of it.

When I cut it out totally I too started loosing weight like crazy. Water is probably your best option.

no
The unhealthy part of fat-free or diet products is what the manufacturer puts back in to keep flavor. If they aren't using real sugar then they are using artificial sweetner, which is unhealthy on its own, let alone when you mix it with acid and preservatives.

No Pop Period!
Pop/Soda...whatever you want to call it...it's not healthy and will NOT further enhance your image and fitness goals. period. it's very simple and with pop there is no grey area!

Other Soda Alternatives?
What is the feeling of switching Soda out with other low calorie drinks like Gatoraid, Poweraid, and their low/no calorie alternatives?

Searching labels I also find a lot of diet sodas that only reduce calories. Example is when the original has like 270 calories per serving and the diet version has 200. Not really helping as much as you think when roughly 3500 calories = 1 lb of scale weight. Ironically they can also triple the sodium content as well.

But what about Gatoraid's 60 calories per serving or Poweraid's 70? I know that energy drinks are really bad replacements.

I agree that water is the best thing to drink calorie wise and I make sure that I mix in pure water regularly throughout my day. Water is boring to most soda drinkers and can also lead to it's own toxia if over done without enough sodium in your diet. (I read an article in a scientific journal that said that sodium is the method to which water is carried in the blood stream, and that it rides along on blood the same way other nutrients do. It also aids the capillary process to help get water through the smaller vessels and capillaries. And also aids in the transfer of water through cell membranes.) Some sodium is good too much is bad.

what?
just so you're aware, if a can or bottle of soda is diet and says 0 calories then it DOES NOT have any sugar or high fructose corn syrup. those are the things that add calories. so diet sodas (and i'm not talking about diet juices or gatorades) only use substitutions; splenda, nutrasweet, etc.

i've heard different things about weight loss with sodas including diet sodas. personally, i lost 18 lbs in 3 months a few years ago and i didn't stop drinking soda entirely. i just made sure it was always diet. concerning your health - there is nothing nutritional that you are going to gain from drinking diet soda and water is ideally always the best choice.
