Discouraged
I am so discouraged!.......for Christmas, I recieved a fitness assesment from the gym I am a member of. I have been working out hard ( not eating as well as I could) but really thought at 147 lbs and size 6 pants I was doing well.......but found out my body fat was 26.7% and they want me to get down to 18% body fat.....how much more can I do??.....just so frustrated now

The Hook is Set....
So how do Gyms make money? they tell people they are not in good enough shape and tell you "if you buy this much membership, we can make you look like this, and you should WANT to look like this." Fitness is about what you are happy with, not what other people think you should look like. If you are happy with yourself, your there! If not, suck it up and work on it. Good Luck this year.

Don't let it get to you
Numbers don't mean anything. I was a size 6 at 140 lbs and told I was too thin by one person and not thin enough by another. Bah! What matters isn't what they think. What matters is how you feel. Don't let someone else, even an "expert", tell you what is right for your body. I always think that BMI and body fat percentage is a guide, not a law.
*hugs*

Tell 'em to shove it
27% body fat is not bad for a woman. That puts you in the healthy range. 18% is extremely low for a woman - that would be in the figure competition/model range for most women. There are huge differences in the way you measure body fat- measurements, calipers, the electodes, handheld electric stim (which only measures upper body), and finally water displacement. Water displacement is the best method, but not practical for most ppl. For the other methods, your level of hydration for that day, the person's skill who is doing the test could both influence the results by a lot. Also, a woman with curves is always going to have a higher %. You know if you feel tight or not and how much extra fat you are carrying. If you feel like you are making progress and feeling leaner, that is probably a better judge than the gym. FYI I had a trainer tell me 2 yrs ago I was morbidly obese b/c he measured me at 35% body fat - at 5'4", 135 lbs, working out 4x/week and a 29" waist. Right. Whatever. Open your eyes.
