Exercise guidance please for a beginner?
Greetings! Just joined today and am watching my diet. Exercise is my great stumbling block. Need to lose 50lb. Been sedentary. Obviously, don't belong to a gym. Have a few aches and pains, but generally healthy. Where to start with the exercise? I assume walking...any tips, inspiration, for most effective plan? Am excited about getting to work.

Keep it simple
Don't try to over do it. I would start out with 30 minutes a day as a target excercise block. So at least do 30 minues a day. If you start out just walking, that is fine. Start there, then increase speed or time.

Get a walking buddy.
I agree that walking is the best way to start. Too stay motivated, find a walking buddy or buddies and set a schedule for your walks. Good luck!

Not so sure about the "buddie" system
Congratulations Chapel101, you've already taken the first (and BIGGEST) step...and that is to comit to a healthier lifestyle. Yay..! I agree that walking is your best bet right now. I found a very good program that progressively takes you (or should I say "makes you") go to the next level. After a while we become comfortable and enjoy staying at a particular fitness "box". Google: C25K You'll see what I mean. I tried this program and it is not only very motivating, it's a lot of fun. You will see yourself progressing from week to week and each time you do so, you are going to see incredible results, both physically and mentally. I'm sorry baystreetgirl. I'm not a supporter of the buddy system. It may work for some, Chapel101 you'll have to see if that will work for you. But, I tend to see people making those 30 minutes more of a social time rather than truly concentrating on the workout. You should be focused on your body posture, your intensity, your breathing, your heart rate...etc. When you are focused and centered on your workout, you will see that you get much more out of it. The buddy system might work better if it's an online buddy. Anyway, good luck!

Yes you have taken the first step. But I'm a little different than the rest I say go for it. Join a fitness center. When you start a low calorie diet about 25% of weight lost lean muscle tissue, leading to a slower metabolism. The best way to deal with unwanted flab begin a exercise which includes both weight training for increase lean muscle tissue. Aerobic activity to burn fat. I checked out ENevas C25K and it's good.

start slow and safe
Two years ago I was gung-ho and got a work-out series for at home. I skinny little drill sargent type woman, who is now very famous on several tv show, harassed you into doing more and more. Well aside from body pain that would make a race horse drop, I also tore both muscle and tendons. In the end I had to have it repaired, and gained even more weight due to recovery.
If your really just starting you can go to your local family video and often they have free rentals on self-help dvds. I still like my old sweating to the oldies.
Its true "no pain no gain" but pain should not be ignored. If you start slow and build up you will be less likely to throw in the towel. And reduce your chance of injury.
