Helmets?
I just got a new bike and need to buy a helmet to go with it. But I don't know if some helmets are better than others or if the more expensive ones really are safer. Any helmet experts around to fill me in?

Ratings for Helmets
There are a couple of rating systems for helmuts, though I don't remember at the moment what they are called. Go to a good bike web site (www.bikenashbar is one, though there are many) and poke around to see what you learn.
Do buy a helmut and use it every time you ride!
My husband and I have a (perhaps unkind) joke that people who ride bikes without helmuts have done a cost/benefit analysis and decided their brains aren't worth $50. (Though you now can buy a helmut for less.)

the guy at my local bike shop told me that the only real difference between a cheapo helment and the expensive ones is comfort and fit.. the cheap one is just as safe, but is probably heavier, less aerodynamic, has less venting and air flow, less comfortable, etc. etc. when compared to the pricier selections.
Me, I'm happy to pay more for comfort.

Helmets, not HELMUTS.
I'm cracking up at your email. Loved the sentiment. But if your brain is worth $50, please learn to spell.

Helmet ratings
Well, spelling is really not all that important now is it? But, what is important is protecting the ole brain pan. The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission requires that all bicycle helmets meet their standards. To go further you might want to check out:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/travel/bike-helmets-606/ratings/latest-ratings/index.htm
Be sure to click on the left links to get the Overview, etc. Here you will learn that neither comfort nor safety is directly related to price. In fact, dig around a bit and you'll learn that, due to consumer reports ratings, some helmets from Trek were recalled.
Me, I ordered the Slant for less than $50 which provides (relatively) stylish, strong protection. You can keep your $150 helmet...
