I have to do something
I just joined a few minutes ago. I am 32 years old and very active with my young children. Despite my busy and active life I am very overweight. I have serious eating dependencies tied to every emotion from happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and even boredom.

I weigh 256 lbs and this is the heaviest I have even been ... including during pregnancies. I am over 6 feet tall so this offsets the weight some but not enough to justify it or excuse it. I have concluded that I must loose 76 pounds over the next year.

I do not feel healthy or sexy. In fact I feel tired and disgusting. My husband has the same issues I have an he is over 300 pounds now at age 39. I must emphasize that we are pretty active and do not have any health problems yet. We must figure out what to do to get to the root of the problem and solve this issue before we ruin our lives and the lives of our children.

I am here because I desperatly need inspiration, community and acountability. I have no idea where to start or what changes to make that I can make a real lasting change in my life. I need any help and advice I can get. Especially real practical steps to take.

Thanks

Don't wait till you get a bad health diagnosis. I was 376 when I had a heart issue. I lost 40 then just stayed there. Now I got diagnosed diabetic and it really hit me. I went to low carb 2000 calorie meal plan & I feel great, the numbers aren't showing yet but it will. I have a short goal of 25 by new year and long term goal for 100 pound weight loss by Nov 10, 2011. It;s important to have a concrete goal. If you don't have a destination, any road will lead you there. Unfortunately most of just chugging along until bad news wakes you up. You can do this. Just pick a start date get a plan and set goals. It's so much easier having my wife on board as well. see if you can get your husband on board

Start slow and make gradual changes...
I know most of us would like to have the extra pounds off like yesterday, but I am now a firm believer, it is not a diet, and it doesn't end. It is all about making healthier food choices and adding exercise into our daily lives.

You already have started, by wanting to change, and being accountable by signing up and asking where do I start... My suggestion is just start logging in here, and track what you eat for one week, don't do anything different, just see what you eat, so you get a better idea of the calories, fat, carbs, sodium, etc... you normally take in. After the first week, then start thinking in terms, of better choices, substitutions, or things to add or eliminate from your diet that you can live with, without too much struggle.

Just as an some examples do you drink 8-10 glasses of water a day, if not focus on this for the next week. Did you eat fast food, if you did, and know you eat it frequently, try a bake potato instead of french fries, or instead of soda, get the bottled water, or even if you get the large combo, switch to a medium size... Then each week, re-evaluate and look for small changes to keep building upon.

As to exercise, again just start slowly, get a pedometer and start tracking your steps in a day and find ways to add to it ( parking farther away from work and stores, taking the stair versus elevator, and so on.
Once your fitness level improves, then pick a sport or activity you enjoy and commit to it.

Don't get hung up or chained to your scales, gauge more on how you feel, over the numbers. Weight fluctuates a lot, the scales may say you have gain 3 pounds, but it may be your adding muscle, which weighs more than fat. Or you could be retaining water, so you may want to track your sodium intake. Or you may be on the verge of a large weight loss the next week, and your body is hanging on to water weight prior to upping your metabolic rate.

So go by, are you sleeping better, feeling less stressed, have more energy, these are the perks, you can feel daily, and the scales and tape measure will soon fall in line with your daily commitment.
