NEW TRICK DEPT (OLD DOG DIVISION)
After some 65 years of biking, I learned a new trick yesterday. At the suggestion of a high school pal, got a "Mountain Mirrycle" mirror and put it on my bike. Lots of old guys use mirrors on their bikes (and rowing) probably because they are getting too stiff to look around. I am not too stiff and have held the mirror in contempt. Wrong. It's not a complete substitute for a careful look around, when you're turning, but it is terrifidc. As important as on a car. Try it, it works. Not perfectly but not bad. And you don[t have to be old to get a lot out of it. Chris Crowley

I have been riding and touring for 30 years...started wearing a "hot" Pro-Tec helemt and cardboard-designed Bata bike shoes. Have always worn an eyeglasses mirror.
Still biking everyday on my 24 year old Raleigh Professional. Have updated it to clipless pedals. Still use sew-ups, though.

Mirrors for cyclists
There are two types of mirrors, ones that fits on your bike and ones that fit on your head (eyeglass or helmet mount).
The ones that fit on thehandlebars of your bike give you a wide field of view but tend to get bent when you lay your bike down.
The ones that fit on your helmet or eyeglasses are much harder to get used to and to get adjusted by allow you to see more behind you with a simple turn of your head.
Like Chris said, if you are going to turn or swerve around an obstacle, a quick look over your should is critical to let the motorists behind you know that you are doing something different. Always look before turning or swerving...!
