Pinion Nut
I'm being lazy cuz I could look up the answer but thought I ask you guys.
Here in NM we kinda have bumper crop of pinion nuts(which I love). On the food tracker it doesn't tell me if the nuts are shelled or unshelled. 1 oz unshelled is quite different from the shelled.
Whats your knowlegde on that?

pinion nuts
OMG they are to die for.I toast them in the microwave or oven. Some pasta dishes have them under pine nuts.
Now let me tell how to pick them and then you will understand why they sale for $20 a lbs. They are about the size of a sunflower seeds. They fall on the ground from pine trees in the fall normally every 3-5 years. Along with the pine needles, dirt, rocks, rabbit poop and pine sap. I hand pick them with my fingers either sitting on my butt, mostly kneeling or on my tummy.Some people will put a tarp under the tree and shake so the nuts fall on the tarp. I'm old fashion and do it the hard way. I am having to buy them because is been 5 years since we had a crop in norther NM but Gallup/Grants has alot. Its hard and time consuming work but you know I have chronic back problems that when I pick pinion feels so much better. Its all the stetching I do.
What you buy in in the store does not compare to the fresh ones.

My mother and grandmother were orginally for Northern NM so I grew up with pinon,sopapillas and empanaditas(little mincemeat pies)
Hey stonelove I am orginally from Oxnard and almost ended in SanDiego. I sent many summers in San Diego with family.
