Somebody say " On your mark, get set..." So I know to get started!
I am 45 yrs old, my body knows this and feels it,does not co-operate when I DO try to exercise. My step daughter was adopted out when she was born,we will be meeting her for the first time in Sept. I want to lose whatever weight I can for her,I want to be healthy for the grandkids. But I am my own worst enemy and I will beat myself up mentally trying to exercise. My brain gets a better work out than my body.Anyone have any advice how to get past the "little nay sayers" in the head? I need a cheering section!!

a little inspiration.
Hi there. My mother had the same problem. She wanted to lose weight and be healthy but that little voice in her head kept holding her back and knocking her down. I'm going to tell you what I told her. You aren't going to be able to workout and lose weight like you did when you were in your 20's and 30's. Your body is different now. Start out walking on the treadmill or outside as much as you can. Even if its just 5 minutes starting out. Thats 5 minutes you weren't doing before. Pat yourself on the back for doing it and do it again the next day, maybe you can go a few more minutes. Then before you know it you will up to 30 minutes 5 days a week and on your way to healthy. My mom has went down 2 pant sizes already just from being more aware of what she eats and walking as much as her body will let her! Good luck!!!

Give your head something to think about
First off - GOOD for you for deciding to take charge and make changes for a heathier you and set an example for your grandkids. That is a great movitation to keep you going when the going is tough.

I have found that the best way to keep my head engaged in my workout rather than wandering with negative thoughts is to make it work out too. Working out with weights is the best way to do this - it takes focus and concentration and it's hard - your mind won't have time to wander off into the land of self-defeatist thoughts. For cardio too - the harder I'm working the less my mind wanders. That's harder to manage in the beginning (hard cardio vs lifting) when you've got weak spots and imbalances that turn into sore joints and stabbing pain after a hard cardio session. But - lifting is great for your body at any age - you can build muscle and increase body density at any age through simple strength building exercises and also correct posture and reverse a lot of the aches and pains that creep up as you age (I have also found weight training to be a God-send for managing my own cronic pain and back issues).

Celebrate each acheivement as you get stronger and healthier and keep your motivation top of mind. Each day that you succeed in making it thru your exercise session makes the coming weeks and months easier to get thru too and eventually you will look forward to your exercise and cherish that time that you spend investing in a healthier you - I promise!
