That Urge to Eat Everything in Sight
I have the exercise thing down. I even have the proper eating thing down... most of the time. Sometimes in the evening though, it is like some switch goes off in my head and i can't stop eating. That third plate of dinner etc and then grazing all night till i go to bed. Any tips on shutting that unconrollable urge down. And that is not after a day of starvation but after a day of 2 proper meals and 2 proper small snacks.

As your screen name states... it is all bout being reasonable.... or being moderate.... not extreme. Thanks. It is still almost virtually imposible for me to find that off switch in the evening, a lot of evenings.

According to a recent guest on Dr. Oz ...
A recent guest on Dr. Oz's television show said that for some people, eating over a certain amount of sugar or fat (I think that's what was said) prevents some hormone called leptin (again, I'm foggy on the details) from sending full signals to the brain. I'm not sure which episode this was. I don't think it was in the episode's description on the tv menu, but the segment might be described on Dr. Oz's website.

I do like bread and carbs. I have read that your body can't tell the difference between a spoon full of sugar and carbs. Maybe that is it. Someone in my office that has done atkins said that it is a Carb allergy? Related to fat, i thought fat helped give you that satisfied feeling that tells you to stop eating?

Last year, I did a liquid diet through our hospital's wellness center. It is a high protien low carb diet. I lost 60 pouds in 10 weeks. It is incredible but it also wreaks havock on your system. The other good part is that your blood sugar becomes perfect and your blood pressure is incredible. The other problem is i skipped the part where they teach you how to eat because i know how. I just didn''t to it. What i need to do is try a very low carb meal plan for a week and see how the evenings go.

Carbs that contain fiber are the best
Maybe you would have learned something from the part of the hospital program that you skipped. That may have been the maintenance plan...

A healthy diet needs to include carbs from fruits and vegetables. Not much fruit juice, but whole fruit with its fiber and its enzymes. Even though whole fruit has carbs, it digests slow and steady because of its fiber content. Did you see my post about Dreamfield's pasta? It only has 5g of digestible carbs per serving. That's because they make it with soluble fiber. It fills you up, but not all the carbs are absorbed. I like to make a sauce for it with a little 95% lean meat, lots of vegetables (for flavor & fiber), and a little olive oil for good fat.

I agree with you that fat feels satisfying. I think the guest was not saying that these people should avoid all fat, but that they should moderate their fat intake. Personally, I avoid hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats altogether because they wreak havoc in the body (the body doesn't know what to do with these unnatural forms of fat). This year I gave up fried foods because of the imbalance of omega oils in modern diets.

As I mentioned, I'm not sure I correctly remembered the leptin blocking triggers for the people affected. I hope you'll check out the Dr Oz website.

Sugarless Gum or mints
Try chewing sugarless gum or eating a peppermint. That usually helps me when I feel like I want to snack like crazy.

I go through Stride and 5 gum like crazy. My wife tells me she is tired of hearing about it, just do it. Unfortunately she can eat what ever she wants and stays thin as a rail. But back to the Wellness Center Diet, you have to go to a weekly meeting, and i think one of the things that helped there was that you had to report in and talk about how things were going. You had to report in. I think having a diet buddy that you could report in to might help. Someone you could reach out to when you felt like eatng. Something that woud be a distraction until that urge to eat everything in sight passes. It is odd because there are times where you have that uncontrollable urge to eat everything in sight but if you don't, 10 minutes later the urge is gone.

Eat something every 3 hours
Experts say not to let more than 5 hours pass between meals. I've been trying to eat every 3 hours. I notice that if I put off eating past 3 hours, I start to feel deprived. Whereas, if I eat every 3 hours, I'm almost tired of eating! Try it and let me know how it goes.
