Exercise
the one thing I can tell you that is absolutely essential is exercise. You may say that you don't have time, or energy to exercise, or you can't afford to join a gym. No more excuses!!
You need about 40 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week, and you don't need any special equipment, except for a pair of walking shoes or sneakers, and a watch or stopwatch.
you choose an aerobic activity -- it can be walking outside, running, jumproping, bicycling, dancing, or climbing stairs, or using gym or home equipment like a treadmill, elliptical trainer, stair climber, or stationary bike, for example. Now, imagine the absolutely hardest you could possibly work at doing this activity. That's a level "10" of exertion.

help you set an easy starting pace
you pick the activity…walking, dancing, biking, rowing
only spend 1 minute of a 20 minute workout at your maximum pace
spend the next twenty minutes doing leg raises, lunges, and push-ups at your pace

The Secret
My mother always used to say that the secret to losing weight was moving more and eating less. I would modify that to say move more, eat smart, not necessarily less. Goof luck, I know it's harder than it sounds, but it really is the secret!

Help with weight gain
My daughter had the same problem. Find a good doc who can regulate your system. She has hers corrected now and no problems with weight anymore. I think setting small goals that you can reach weekly is a good thing. Such as plan a workout and follow through. Then plan healthy meals, try to give up snacking on empty calories, such as chips, candy etc. Replace with yogurt, fruit, nuts etc. I keep a big bowl on the kitchen shelf with 100 calorie snacks; so when I have to eat something it's a portion control snack. Best of Luck!
