Tricks for affording a healthy diet
With the economy as it is and not having the best paying job, I can find a huge crutch in the fact that is costs more to eat better. I hate to approach the produce section of my store and find how expensive some of those things are.
Does anyone have any tips on what to buy or how to buy healthy without breaking the bank??

Gardening
Alot of folks are planting veggies in their own yard or in community gardens. One pack of seeds can grow $50 worth of veggies. Not a bad investment if you are willing to put in the time.

produce
A few places I have lived had asian markets where produce is much more varied, and a lot of times less expensive. If you have any like that you might consider things like chinese cabbage, which lasts a long time in the fridge, and is usually under or close to a dollar. It's really good in a stir-fry. Sometimes things like baby bok choy might be in pre packed bags, or in bulk. and... mangoes are often cheap there too. Just a thought.
Growing your own produce takes less time than you might think. Good luck.

farmers market
Try a farmers market. You can get veggies and fruit in bulk for a lot less. A Grocery store near me it's also reaaly ridiculous. Like a $ per fruit/ veggie. They think it's a great deal? LOL

Aldi/seasonal
I LOVE all types of produce but agree the price tag can be high. 2 tricks #1 eat in season. I don't eat berries in the winter (unless frozen) for example. I buy what's in season here or near here that is usually what is cheapest at the store. It gets me more variety too! The other trick is shopping at Aldi-they often have good deals on produce-only key is not to get more than I can eat! Finally I tend to freeze items I get from friends gardens in the summer time that I can eat during the year, we also go strawberry and raspberry picking and a bunch of those get frozen for smoothies etc.

Seasonal and more
Growing your own, eating seasonal and Farmers Markets are all great money saving ideas. You can also plan your meals around whats on sale at your local supermarket.

I'm afraid farm vegetables won't be enough to start the diet. Are you so confident? Are you sure you won't give it up halfway? I've seen a lot of these guys and they always regret that they could not resist later.
