I tend to do my real work outs (cardio and strength) in the evenings. It is when my son is in bed so I do not get interupted and I have school work to do usually till the early morning hours. The boost of energy from my work out works better than coffee at keeping me focused.

It depends
Weekdays I just don't get up early enough to exercise in the morning. I'll try to exercise at lunch time with either a short walk or doing crunches, pushups, etc. in my office (behind closed doors). Most of my exercise takes place at night during the week. Weekends I like to get it done with early so I have the rest of the day to spend with the family.

why I exercise in the morning
This is why I exercise first thing: I get this question often and I wanted to share my thoughts on when I workout and why you should consider the same! First of all, I just want to be clear that working out each day should be a priority. It only takes a few days of inactivity before you are not motivated enough to push forward with your next workout. I make my workout a priority each and every day (unless I have a scheduled rest day. )

The Best Time For Cardio

The best time to do a cardio workout is going to be in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach. If you can’t do that, choose a time of day that is at least 2-3 hours from your most recent meal. Here’s why doing cardio on an empty stomach is beneficial. Your body uses blood sugars as energy for your muscles during a workout. Think of your glycogen as fuel in your tank. If you are running your body low on blood sugars then your muscle moves to a fat burning stage more quickly.

Your body burns calories mostly in the form of carbs and sugars first, with some fats and moves into fat burning after glycogen stores are lowered. If your body loses the majority of glycogen and then has no fat to burn, it moves to muscle to fuel bodily functions (only after a longer time). Check out a health book or wikipedia if you are curious about more details…

THE POINT is that if you have fasted for a while (Intermittent Fasting is also a great topic) including overnight, then you wake up in the morning with far lower levels of blood glycogen. Your body will move to fat burning faster and you should see more visible results after a few weeks. Also, since you are moving into anaerobic cardio, your body CONTINUES to burn fat throughout the day. Bonus!

Note: This doesn’t work as well with a longer cardio session with a lower heart rate. You will probably hit a “wall” with your energy level and you don’t want that feeling.
