good and bad days
hey there .. I am not in a wheel chair ...yet ... actually today , I accpeted a walker instead of a wheel chair, I am slowly getting to that point .
Working the upper half is hard . I sit and use wieghts 5 lbs then 10 lbs ... and bend and see if I reach my toes ...... somedays I can't but on the good days, it feels good to reach those goals , hope you can share with me as well ~ Hockeymomx3 ~

Headed to Knee replacement surgery
I have been walking on bad knees for over 3 years and will have 1 knee replacement surgery in May. The physical therapist gave me strengthening exercises for my leg to do before the surgery -- moderate leg lift and ham string stretches. Because I have sat too much since my joints started hurting, my arms need strengthening too, so , if I am sitting in my recliner, or driving, I take one arm and lift it to shoulder height and draw small circles out to one side, do this 8 times. I got a book on stretching which has all different stretches for different sports. I'll look and see if they have one for wheelchair football. Never give up is my motto!

pre-surgery as well
I don't have quite an extreme as wheelchair bound or knee replacement, but I am looking at having a torn tendon repaired which will put me out of commission as far as any real lower body exercises are concerned for about 2 months. There are some books out there with sitting exercises, or in a chair. Dumb bells or some other weighted object (water bottles work well) are probably the best bet for arms, shoulders and even a little chest and back exercises that you can do. As you get stronger you can always fill the bottles with heavier items to increase the weight....pebbles, sand, etc. As for the core, you're probably looking mostly at stretches....one I like for the obliques is...arms at your side...slowly stretch one hand as far down as you can while maintaining good posture (head up, shoulders centered over your hips)...your alternate hand should slide up at about the same pace as the one going down to keep you balanced. See if you can touch the ground...then slowly return to center and continue on to the other side. Similar to a side bend but without the arm overhead. You can do crunches as well, slower is better, really feel the muscles contracting as you do them. Good goal is sets of 50-100 depending on your level. If you can't do that many, that's ok, just work towards it.

post surgery and NEWBIE
am still in a cast, I use crutches, wheel chair and scooter to "walk" my dog and get around faster. I've been laid up 5 months now and more to come. Been no weight bearing for 6 weeks now and they want 8-12 weeks no weight bearing. Now off pain meds and starting to feel human. Need to workout. Used to ride my bike (put 1,000 miles in last year), only 90 this year, grrrr. Am trying to set up a program that has me working different areas on different days with cardio (bike riding - sorta, bike is on trainer and i hoist myself up, and just rest cast on one pedal and use the other leg) Last time they took the cast off there basically was no calf muscle left. ICK. Anyway, have been "hobbling" around this site and trying to set it up and it's not working. I want 1 group of exercise one day and then 3 days later, then another group then the next day and 3 days later. It's like a 3 day rotation. Mon X1, Tue X2, Wed, X3 wash rinse repeat. I got a plan online here but it didn't turn out and I thought I deleted it. Anywhere here that can help me set up that. I don't want all exercises in one day. Thanks and sorry so long.

Chair exercises and easy ones too
I saw my MIL today and she's in fantastic shape and in great health. I'm not in either. She gave me a website, she wanted me to burn the video to a DVD, but I couldn't but I found this first linked exercise to be pretty easy. If you can't move your legs, part you'll have to ignore, but it's all done sitting in a regular chair. If a find a complete wheelchair plan, I'll post it here. Here's the chair one:

The next has some easy home walking, so it's not good for wheelchair bound, but I have limited movement due to hips and knees, so I think it might help me do something and perhaps others reading this will enjoy this too. I saw they had links to other exercise videos that you can play on the website, but I didn't have time to check them out.

Hope one will help you and the other help some others AND help me too because I barely move and I'll never get this weight off w/o help. All I get is more Prednisone and fatter. Not a pretty site, but working on it.
