camping/backpacking gear
Hi everyone. First off, I am NOT an experienced camper/backpacker, but would like to do more of it, particularly as my kids age. I'd like your opinions on both camping and backpacking gear. I would like to achieve a balance between not having low-quality junk and not breaking the bank. I'd also like to achieve a balance between comfort i.e. tent, sleeping bag, pad but not being weighed down with heavy equipment. I went camping this past weekend at Itasca State Park in MN. Nice place. But my tailbone/back was killing me each night. I had a pad, but on the hard ground it didn't keep me very comfortable. I'd like to do some serious hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail and canoe the Boundary Waters. In the B.W. you have to carry out everything you bring in. Leave no trace of your presence is key. So lightweight gear is a must but I'd like to stay comfortable too.
So, here it goes guys--- what are the best lightweight tents and how much can I expect to pay? Best airpads? Best foods to have on backpacking trips? Best way to prepare food? Jetboil? What are the ESSENTIALS in a backpack? Those of you who backpack, pretend that you're loading your pack... tell me what you put in it. Realistically, I can carry a 30-35 lb pack at the most for extended hiking.
Thanks!

Camping gear
Your message is now a few weeks old, so you may have already solved your problem regarding camping gear. If not, you may want to write back to me as I have recently made the painful decision to sell my gear.
I have been a hiker and backpacker for more than 4 decades. During that time, I have owned a lot of different equipment. Over time, as money became less of an obstacle, I improved the quality of my gear. What I have now is good quality gear, chosen for comfort and durability.
I have just had my third back operation and I can no longer handle the rigors of back-packing, hence my decision to get rid of my stuff. My outfit is quite complete, including back-pack, tent, sleeping bag, ground pad, cooking gear, and many other items that make back-packing easier and/or more enjoyable.
If interested, e-mail me and I will go into specifics regarding the details of my gear.
