Party Dilema
It's so incredibly hard to control our 'buffet style!' eating at parties, isn't it?! I'm like that! Especially with sweets!

What I do (knowing that I'll be attending a party that day) is, I pre-plan my day, knowing that I'm going to eat desserts. I'll 'reserve' 500-600 calories for desserts. Using my very rough, rules of thumb, 300 calories equal:
1. One SMALL slice of cake
2. two and half, homemade cookies
3. one small cup cake, but w/o the towering dollups of icing that you see on cup cakes nowadays.

ok, so now subtrack 500 calories from your day. If you're at, say, a 1400 calorie limit (chosen for argument sake), that means you have 900 calories that you can spend on eating healthy :)

The key is to ration your total daily calorie allowance. And especially with party days, you'll need to 'plan' how you're going to eat those calories, right from the moment you get up that morning.

This is just what I do.

Good luck! :)

I splurge.
I make it a rule to splurge a couple of times a week. I also make it a rule not to punish myself afterwards in ANY way (not mentally, not physically, not even calorie-wise). I heard from several sources (including a guest on Dr. Oz) that increasing your calorie intake in this sporadic way can actually keep your body burning more calories. Actually, that particular guest was advocating a stricter plan involving (among other things) splurging only once a week, but I haven't been so strict with myself. Since changing my habits in mid-January (including the splurges), I've lost the one pound per week that I set out to lose, even without much exercise. When I'm able to add more exercise, I'll probably be able to lose faster and still have a couple of (guilt-free) splurges per week. I would advocate eating what you want to at parties, especially if you are drinking there.
