are you self-motivated?
Are you motivated enough to work out and exercise alone or do you need to be away from your home environment and the comforts of home? I find there to be too many distractions at home even if they are created by me. The mail, the laundry, some dusting, etc. When I joined the gym, it created an entire new atmosphere and wealth of options for exercising. Look at many different gyms. Make sure they are close to home, convenience to parking, or maybe close to work. Go for a tour, look at the members. Is it a mix of ages and body types or is everyone buff, wearing tons of makeup, and really young? What kind of classes are offered? Do they give you an orientation where a strength training program is designed for you? Any free personal training sessions offered?

Walking is the best way to start out!
I agree walking is a great form of exercise. Low cost, low impact and easier to get motivated. When you're starting out walking is definitely the way to go. Once you start losing some weight then considering adding weight training, whether you join a gym or buy some free weights as others have suggested.

Waste of money unless you use it!
Keep in mind that the business model of most gyms is to sell as many memberships as possible but hope that only some members will actually attend. You don't want to be one of the members that's really just paying for those that do attend :)
