why do i gain weight (not muscle) when i work out
I've noticed that when I start to work out again I start to put weight on. I know it's not muscle because you don't build muscle that quickly. I noticed however that at those times my water intake isn't so great. Does anyone know if this happens to me because my body is holding on to the water when I work out?

:)
You could be gaining muscles... it does not take that long, might take long to show... but they are getting bigger ;)

If you don´t drink enough for you´re body, you´re body might be holding on to water. Do you pee as much as you drink?

Are you eating more?

lol oh yea i know when i'm getting enough water because i live in the bathroom! however somedays i just don't think about it so i miss a lot of the water i need. its funny that you asked about my calories. I don't know when to eat more because i usually get it wrong. when i think i need to add calories i do and the weight starts coming on. i then freak out and drop back down. how will i know if it's the right time to add calories?

i just put on 16 pounds
actully you put on weight faster then you would think im tryng to increase hypertrophy and i went into the doct because i thought i got a steroid supplement. he said no if you 500 cals over your bmr ever day for a week youll gain a pound. now im eating around 4000 to 6000 cals. the body is different than most people would geuss. you need to find out your i dont know if im spelling this rite. somatotype, endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph. if your a mesomorph you pack on muslce so fast it isnt even funny. hey body fat test is the only way to go so you dont get mixed results your doing good, keep it up.

it's normal
When you work out - esp when you lift weights, your muscle tissue tears and then it rebuildes (heals) bigger and stronger. That healing process attracts water. If you lift for 3 weeks and then take a week off you'll notice your weight drop down in that week off (b/c your muscles heal and you're taking a break so the water is staying off). Women's weight especially is going to yo-yo back and forth. Drinks plenty of water will help you heal faster and your body to run better generally. I wouldn't worry too much about gaining a little bit of weight when you start working out. Keep track of your weight trends over months, not weeks or days, and you'll see if you're moving in the direction you want to go. Hang in there.

On calorie intake - I personally think ppl worry way too much about calories. If you focus on eating healthy food, and not eating til you're stuffed, you will be fine. Some days you will eat more, some you'll eat less. Back when humans hunted for food they didn't eat every 2 hours or worry about how many calories they ate or what percentage were coming from fat/protein/carbs....and they were a LOT leaner and more muscular than most humans are now (and they didn't eat as much protein b/c meat was a luxury). They didn't live as long...but if they'd had the advantages of modern medicine they'd probably live longer than us. The human body is amazingly flexible, it's designed to adapt. If you overeat consistantly, that's a problem health-wise and it's going to impact your weight too...but if you're not often uncomfortably full after eating you're probably doing fine. Listen to your body - eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, don't eat when you're not hungry.

cals
Excellent posts above -- the key to it all is as lelogosdemoi says "stop when you're full." I think that's the hardest thing to do. Slow down, chew your food, don't eat junk and you'll naturally eat less. People eat so fast they don't let give their stomachs time to tell them that they are full. Make a plate with a balanced meal with reasonable portions. Then don't eat any more than that.

Cardio is the key
Try mixing up your workout routines with cardio exercise. I use "The Biggest Loser" Cardio DVD. Its only$9 bucks at Walmart and it does the trick. Its only a 20 min. workout for 6 weeks.
