Grease a 8x8 inch square baking pan, then set aside.

Combine sugar, cocoa and milk in a medium saucepan. Stir to blend and then bring to a boil, while constantly stirring. Reduce heat to a simmer and do not stir again.

Cook until a small drop of this mixture is able to form a ball when placed in a cold cup of water. When flattened, make sure this ball has the right consistency.

Remove saucepan from heat and add butter, and vanilla extract. Beat with a wooden spoon until fudge loses its sheen. Do not under beat.

Pour into prepared pan and let cool. Cut into squares.
