Heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the beef, onion, and garlic, and cook until beef is brown and onion is tender.

Peel, core, and chop the apples, then add to the pan with all remaining ingredients.

Cook uncovered for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Garnish (optional): Melt 1 tbsp butter and sautee 1/4 cup slivered almonds.

Serve picadillo topped with almonds and accompanied by tortillas or tortilla chips.

Makes 10 servings.
