Pick over the beans to remove and bad or discolored beans and any rocks. Cover with double the amount of water, and let soak overnight. Drain beans and rinse well.
Put beans in stock pot, cover with water 3-4 cups. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer and cook for about 1 hour.
Add the ham, vegetables, broth and spices. Bring back to a boil, then reduce to low and cook for 1-3 hours until beans and vegetables are tender.
