Sift together flour, salt, baking power and cream of tartar.
Cut in vegetable shortening till mixture resembles corn meal.
Whisk egg into milk and then mix into dry ingredients.
Turn out dough onto lightly floured board and pat to 3/4" thick. Cut into 15 biscuits.
Bake at 400 for 20 minutes.
