Directions:  
Adjust oven rack to center position. Preheat oven to 400 F. Add the oil to a well-seasoned, 9-inch cast-iron skillet and heat to the smoking point in the oven.

Meanwhile, combine all of the dry ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl and blend thoroughly. Set aside.

When the oil is hot, add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix with a stiff whip. Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and pour the hot oil into the batter, mixing with the whip while pouring. Pour the batter into the skillet and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and set.

Cool for 10 - 15 minutes in the skillet. Carefully loosen the bread from the edges with a spatula. Slide the spatula under the bread and invert onto a flat surface. Place on a serving dish and serve.
