melt butter, mix butter, graham cracker crumbs and 1/4 c sugar. press in 9 inch pie pan. bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.
whisk egg yolks and condensed milk together. add lime peel and lime juice. mix well. pour into baked graham cracker pie shell. bake about 8 minutes until partially set.
in the meantime beat egg whites and cream of tartar on high speed until soft peaks form. gradually add 1/2 cup sugar while continuing beating until hard peaks form.
spoon meringue on pie starting at edges and filling in to center. bake at 350 degrees 15 minutes or until meringue is browned. cool on rack until cooled and then chill for up to 8 hours.
