Texas Half Marathon Countdown - 132 Days

 Unrated

Well, we did a bit over a 4 mile run this week (plus 2.5 miles of walking before and after). Next week we're scheduled to do 5 miles for our long run. I was pretty fatigued by 4 miles but I'm proud of what we did and I'm looking forward to pushing myself next week.

This was also the first week I tried doing it with my iPod. I liked it! I listened to the Marathon Talk podcast and I found it inspiring and involving to listen to while I ran. My legs ached quite a bit this week so

Texas Half Marathon Countdown - 136 Days

We've adopted one of the Galloway Half Marathon to Finish plans. This one allows 19 weeks of training before the half marathon. That seems pretty much ideal to us since our training time before the half marathon is just one week longer than the training plan. We're going to San Diego in September and we think it might mess up that week's training. But as long as nothing else gets in the way of the training schedule, we'll be ok.

We're on the second week of his plan. This week we ...

Texas Half Marathon Countdown - 146 Days

Today was the second weekend where we did a long training run/walk. Today the total distance was ten miles with four miles of that actually being running (or at least that peculiar run/walk/run pattern that Galloway and Bingham promote). To get the distance we cover the Wolf River path twice. After the first time through we grab a snack from a cooler in the car, refresh our water, and then head to the second phase. It's working nicely. Other things that are working are wearing light running runn...

Texas Half Marathon Countdown - 159 Days

Today is the first day of our Half Marathon training. We selected the Texas Half Marathon because it is January 1, which is just a good time for us and gives us plenty of time to train for it, and because it looks like a fun, small marathon. (We're a little intimidated by crowds.) Plus it should be a bit warmer than we can get around here on New Years Day. The final reason? They have a big, honking race medal and give each runner a rubber duck with their ranking on it. It just sounds like fun.

Here's Dr. Yoni Freedhoff's surprising advice on how to eat. He says avoid getting hungry!

Here's a basic hunger prevention strategy. Try it - you might be surprised at how well it works (note calorie range to represent minimums for women-men):

Breakfast within 30 minutes of waking, at least 350-450 calories with at least 15 grams of protein

Eating eve

Review the Previous Week in the areas of movement, food, and mind:

Last Week's Successes - Food: This was the high point of my week. I did really well and the results on the scale rewarded me for my diligence. Here's what worked: early morning high fiber breakfasts consisting of wheat bran, shredded wheat, raspberries (or blueberries), and soy milk; front loading the calories in the early part of the day and then saving enough calories so that I ...

Review the Previous Week in the areas of movement, food, and mind:

Last Week's Successes - Food: I did best in the early part of the week, managing to up my fiber to 50+ for several days running and even brought my total calories down. I've learned to make a particularly healthy cookie and I'm generally increasing my knowledge of healthy, high fiber foods.

Last Week's Successes - Exercise: With the exception of Sa...

Review the Previous Week in the areas of movement, food, and mind:

Last Week's Successes - Food: This last week was a distinct improvement over previous weeks. I've added more fiber to my diet and that seems to be helping provide greater satiety. I've rearranged Shabbat dinner to be tofu, stir-fry, and brown rice, which is both delightful and healthier than other treat dinners.

Last Week's Successes - Exercise: I...

Inspirational Quote: Running

Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:17 AM filed under Exercise & Fitness postings
"Realizing that our running goals, and indeed our running itself, are for us alone is a liberating thought. Then the cold dark mornings aren't about training for a distant goal. They're about the simple joy of getting out there and running. Suddenly, when the run itself is the goal, there are no more bad runs. Suddenly it doesn't matter if we don't finish within our goal time--or don't finish at all. What matters is that we tried, that we enjoyed the process. What matters is that we got out...
