Are Saturdays bad for diets?

"Are Saturdays bad for diets?", she asked.  I was sweating like an old mare who had just pulled the plow for the lower 40.  She was looking fresh after a 15 minute jaunt on the ellipse, complete with cell phone in one ear, latte in the other, and a body fat percentage of about 10% (on a good day).  I was about to sail into the sea of "unfair I have big butt genes" when I began to think about it.

Are Saturdays bad for diets?  Around our house maybe - I'm a single mom of two great boys- but face it, they are BOYS. They have perfect aim when it comes to pushing my buttons but not in the bathroom.  They have perfect hearing when you whisper to a friend on the phone "I've made them surprise brownies", but are totally deaf when you announce (over a bullhorn) that it's time for them to start the laundry,. And if the dog has an accident, eagle eye who can spot a dollar bill 10 feet away in the street, has suddenly gone blind.  That growing lake in the entrance hall must have been made by gnomes....

Saturdays mean errands, lists, more errands, someone's soccer game, someone else overslept for their cross country meet, and "oh Mom I think my lace is hopelessly knotted" on their cleat and it is 5 minutes before the equipment check that begins every game.  Before I had the guys (and was disciplined and also had an entire Saturday to ponder weightier issues such as the right nail polish color for my pedicure), I proudly brought my own apple and diet sprite to a movie to maintain my hourglass shape.  Now that the hourglass is more ample (especially in the southern glass), I find it easier to reach for a bagel, a muffin (horrors) and soothe the frenzy inside me with a nice latte, while keeping everyone else calm.

No more!  Man the battle stations - today was another busy Saturday, and I've only consumed 800 calories, all well chosen, and hit the gym with a fat blasting 45 minute cardio workout.  No Virginia, Saturdays don't have to be bad for diets.  When they are part of a course of action that's a lifestyle change they are just another day to plan for, or to build some discipline.  BUT - just in case my son should come to tell me the sound of running water is because he forgot to turn off the bathtub and went to sleep, I've got my latte money counted and ready to go.  That's the middle age woman's version of Plan B. <snort>
