A New Year

2010 starts the second year of an odessey that has taken me from a 49 year old 185 pound couch potato, to a 125 pound runner training for both a 10K and half marathon this year!
An incredible journey it has transformed not only my figure, but my life. I can't begin to describe the benefits I have been blessed with over the past year.....more energy, better skin, less stress, confidence.....the list is never ending.
It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be either.....the key is to never give up and not to let disappointment rule your workouts. There are bad days - days where you proably just shouldn't have gone to the gym......leave them when you leave the gym. Each day is a fresh start with new opportunities and challenges to meet. The glass is ALWAYS half full.....all you have to do is drink.
I have now become 'obsessed' as my family would say with fitness. It has permeated every aspect of my life....work, diet, social activities. I do not do anything these days without weighing what impact it will have on my overall goals. Crazy coming from someone who a little over a year ago hadn't been to a gym or run since my daughter was born - 17 years ago!
To those of you just starting - if I can do it at 49 anyone can start. Advice would be:
1. Only compete against yourself
2. Do it for you - no one else. You deserve the best you can be
3. Set goals that are realistic....I will never win a marathon, but that doesn't mean I can't partiicipate!
4. Make sure you balance your life as well as your workouts. Decrease stress and make sure you nurture, mind, body and spirit in your training. I find cardio, strength training and yoga to be a great blend for me.
5 Don't let the other couch potatoes talk you down! Believe me they will try! Stay strong and you will.....stay strong.
