When to start day one

Well here is my challenge,  I need to lose 40lbs which is not alot but it will make me feel 100% better.  Its always the starting of when and how to start weight loss training.  Life gets busy especially when you have 2 kids and a wife.  My wife whom I love dearly has just recently returned to work after a year and change maternity leave after the birth of our 2nd daughter.  So for the past two weeks I have hummed and hawed about it - I drive by a gym on my way to work and way home, they just opened a new 24hr gym down the road from my house so there really is no excuses.  So March 1st will be my starting target and I plan on having the 40lbs gone by my 33rd Birthday in July.  Its not just for me but for my two girls and wife.  If anyone has any strong advise on how to get over the first few weeks as for staying on track it would greatly be appreciated.
