Physical limits
I am new to FitClick. I have been on a diet since I was in the 4th grade. My mom was always wanting me to lose weight. I have tried every diet, even amphetimines. I lost over 70 lbs after my twins were born. I managed to keep most of it off until my mom and dad had cancer at the same time. Then, it was more emotional eating. Over the last 20 years since their death I was able to keep the gaining to a minimum. In 2006 I had a major accident with both calcanious heels crushed, hip broken, broken arm. I was in the hospital and rehab for 2+months. Then in rehab in home for 6 months. I am no longer on a walker, but still in much pain. I am not able to exercise enough to keep my heart rate up. Medication I am taking makes for weight gain. Pain control or weight control. I am contemplating gastric bypass surgery. HELP

physical limits
tough story. but you need to try to build up your activity level over time -- this isn't going to happen overnight. just walk as much as you can. then walk a little bit more the next day. then a little bit more.

another key is to just walk as much as possible -- to the store, to the post office, whatever extra you can squeeze it. maybe get a pedometer and try to hit 5000 steps a day, then 6000, etc.

on the diet side maybe just focus on eating a balanced diet with reasonable caloric levels. really focus on portion control and not getting blowing out your calories. schedule your cheating (say every fri you have a little ice cream) so you have something to look forward to and so that you don't randomly cheat.

drink water as much as possible (eliminate soda, alcohol) and junk and pump up your fiber totals. if you get hungry at night eat a small bowl of high fiber cereal.

you can do it

non-walking ideas
I do believe that where there is a will there is a way - if you are not able to exercise on your feet, there is still much you can do! Hang in there and don't give up - you may have to be more creative, but remember SOMETHING is better than nothing so focus on figuring out some things you can do and just don't waste any worry on things you can't do.

Have you tried swimming? There are many standing, seated, floor work exercise you can perform that will not involve impact on your heels.

I just did a search for seated exercises and came up with this workout that you can do completely from a chair - I think it would be suitable for a beginner and should get your heart rate up - many of them are better performed standing but if that is uncomfortable working out seated - or flat on your back - is always better than not at all. Maybe this will give you some new ideas http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/l/blobeseexercise.htm

Try swimming
Try swimming or water aerobics. It will take the weight off your injured lower extremities and is a great way to exercise. It will help you get toned up and then maybe you can try more exercises out of the water.
