Whey protein powder
Does protein powder go bad? Mine tastes the same and smells the same. But I'm not feeling too good after I have some. I do 1 scoop (chocolate flavored) in 1/2 cup milk with 1 banana added in.

Also what are good ones that I can get? I use the one from the gym and while it tastes fine I'm switching gyms soon and won't be able to buy it anymore.

Thanks!
Jess

I bought Top Care Whey & Soy Protein at Walmart. It expires May 2011.

Protein powders can go bad
Protein powders can go bad. Usually they smell wrong when they do. It may be that the chocolate is masking the bad smell.

powder recommendations
Here are 2 that I use and recommend:
Syntha 6 (the chocolate mint is the best flavor, actually it's downright awesome)
and Metabolic Drive (I've only tried the vanilla one, it's ok).
It'll save you a lot of money to order online - my hubby and I usually buy from bodybuilding.com.

I used to take protein powder religiously right before a workout but I have more recently cut back to only taking it when I am in workaholic mode and can't break away long enough to cook or eat a regular meal. I actually do a 24-hour fast now 1 day a week and I have had many great workouts on days that I'm fasting. I have come to realize that the hunger feeling and "loss" of energy in the gym is in your brain...I have been able to train REALLY hard fasted with no ill effects (although I'll say, I can't take the sauna for as long fasted lol), and no heartburn!! I now put more emphasis on getting good fats than protein...I take 4,000 mgs of fish oil a day and use olive, hazelnut and coconut oils liberally in my cooking...and that helps my workout sessions and recovery (and cronic pain issues) more than anything else ever has. Feeling strong and energetic is mostly linked to the amnt of sleep I've gotten, how "clean" I've been eating, and the mental state I choose to be in. Protein powder isn't bad - but I think I was taking in more calories than I really needed when I was using it regularly - and there are a lot of sugars and preservatives and things your body can do without in the vast majority of them. I'm not trying to convince you to give up protein powder...just pointing out that the industry putting out all the "research" on how much protein you need to consume to build muscle or lose fat has selling that protein powder as their #1 priority. It's always best to listen to your own body first and figure out what works for you - and don't be afraid to experiment. If protein powder works great for you, by all means use it - just don't feel like you have to spend $ on it b/c someone else (even a trainer) told you you needed to to see results.

Protein
Yeah, whey protein can go bad, it will smell funky, kind of sour.

The GNC Pro Performance tastes great, I like vanilla and banana cream, but it is really expensive, like $17/LB. When I first bought whey I did a lot of research on what whey was used for and its effects, but not on cost and where to get it so I over paid. But if money isn't an issue for you, its the best I have had.

Id recommend you check out a supplement warehouse (.com & a few retail locations). I really like "4ever Fit" or if you like to buy a lot of whey at a time, "Better Body Sports" sells in 5LB or lager containers. The 4ever fit is around $15 for 2LBs and better body is about $40 for 5LBs. Both taste good with milk, which is how I take my protein in the morning, but I take the post workout with water and the better body is really bad in just water.
