amount of protein per lb of body weight
I have read alot about how much protein you need per lb of body weight, however, nowhere is it made clear which body weight?

I mean if i weigh 270 lbs and want to go down to 215 do i eat the amount of protein for my current body weight or for my desired weight?

Protein calculation
Set a goal weight and look up how many calories/day you need to maintain it. Divide by 10 to get your protein calorie minimum. Divide by 4 to get grams (protein has 4g/Calorie).

A healthy body needs a certain number of calories to maintain a specific weight. To maintain existing muscle, at least 10% of those calories should be protein. Another 10% of those calories should be fat, so oil-soluble nutrients can be used. Get 25 grams of fiber a day, and the other calories' source just doesn't matter.

it depends
On whether you want your body composition to change as your weight does. If you are trying to increase lbs of muscle at the same time as decreasing (more) lbs of fat - you need about 30% of calories to come from protein. I do think you can get away with 10% if you're just trying to maintain muscle, but you definitely need more to gain. Based on either weight, I think you need at least 200g of protein a day.

Fats are vitally important too as the above poster noted. You need at least 10% of calories from fats - up to 30%.

If you're just trying to lose weight and don't care if you're losing muscle as well as fat - eat based on the weight you want to be.

Protein requirements
One suggestion that I've read is for 1 g of protein per lb of ideal body weight. That level is probably necessary if you're doing lots of fitness activities. My current diet is skewed (in maintenance mode, doing P90X doubles i.e. the program plus running/walking every day), so I'm taking in almost 300 g per day (at an ideal weight of 185 lbs) - without all the exercise, I'd probably be at 165-170 g per day.
