Directions:  
Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 cup chopped dates. Add 1 tsp baking soda.

Cream together:
1/2 cup (8 tbsp) butter
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla

Sift together:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Add dry ingredients to butter mixture and blend.
Add date mixture.

Bake in buttered 9x12x2 pan at 350F for 35-40 mins.

Prepare topping:
5 tbsp brown sugar
5 tbsp heavy cream
3 tbsp butter
Boil together for 3-5 minutes.
Add 2/3 cup shredded coconut.

When cake comes out of oven, immediately spread topping over it and broil for 3-4 minutes.
