GrannyD: Snowshoes or cross-country skiing can give you the 3 miles--and probably burn even more calories because you are using your upper body, too. Cross-country skiing may seem rough at first--the arches in my feet were killing me in the beginning of my first ski--but after a half hour or so, it goes away and you can be immersed in the quiet. It's wonderful and addicting. (And it keeps you warm!) You are lucky to live in the country to be able to just wander on snow shoes or skis! You can rent them first to see which you prefer before buying anything.

I leave in the mid-west and we have below zero temps and over a foot of snow. Walking outdorrs is out of the question until spring. I do not own a treadmill and live in the country so cannot drive into a gym everyday. Any ideas on how to get in 3 miles or walking each day?

Love walking in my local cemetary . . beautiful, clean, quiet & near a stream. In bad weather I use Leslie Sansone's walking DVD's. They are easy to follow, easy on the body, but great for calorie burning and heart health. You use light hands weights during the workouts and it helps with upper body toning.
